Cats Ahoy!

Have you ever heard of the tale of Alfonso the cat who rounded up the cats in the town to board The Kipper ship? You haven’t? Well Alfonso and his crew boarded the ship “on silent soft paws with pistols and cutlasses clamped in their jaws.” Cat-pirates? Yes, cat-pirates!

Cats Ahoy! is a wonderful story filled with rhyming text and beautiful illustrations that will have your children giggling as the cats set sail on the high seas to seize the biggest catch ever from a bunch of unsuspecting, and gullible, sailors. The feline crew then head to Smugglers’ Bay to enjoy a great fishy feast, leaving the townsfolk laughing at the robbed skipper who thought he had seen cat-pirates on a ghost pirate ship.

But before long it’s noted that the cats have all disappeared, and they only come back after a week looking fatter. Suspicions are raised, and the cats questioned, but the cats will admit nothing of course!

Cats Ahoy! is written by Peter Bently and illustrated by Jim Field. First published in 2011 it won the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, but this fishtastic tale is back in the spotlight thanks to a fantastic new cover with gold foil writing.

Cats Ahoy! is available from book stores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R155. It’s recommended for children aged three to five years.

Thanks to Pan Macmillan for sharing this swashbuckling tale with us.
