Lift-the-flap Shapes

It’s no secret that I love books that are interactive, it’s a great way to make reading time even more fun and to encourage your little ones to engage with the book. Lift-the-flap books are a personal favourite of mine, my children have always loved them and I have always enjoyed seeing their excited faces when they discover who is hiding underneath the flap.

This Lift-the-flap Shapes book by Parragon Books was instantly loved, a small board book that features chunky flaps that is perfect for even the smallest of hands. Each double page features a brightly coloured scene from a farm, with a certain shape highlighted both on the page in the surrounds and in the lift-the-flap section. The shapes include a square, circle, rectangle, triangle and a star.

For example, the first spread shows a pig in a muddy puddle. Around him are rolling green hills, hens pecking away at seed, apples on a green tree and lots of pretty flowers. You can then use your finger to follow the squiggly-wiggly indented finger trail to see who is in the square shaped hock. Lift-the-flap and you’ll meet two friendly pigs. The square flap also has a square shape drawn on the inside cover to re-enforce the shape. There are also square-shaped buckets of apples and pig food dotted around the farmyard.

Ethan loves the flaps in this book as well as the follow me prompts. In addition to helping to teach shapes, you can also use the illustrations to help teach more about animals, colours and other words too. As always books are a wonderful starting point to lots of conversations!

Lift-the-flap Shapes is available at a recommended retail price of R120 from bookstores and online retailers. It’s a great book to pop into a baby shower present, and will keep kids entertained up until three years of age.

Thanks to Penguin Random House for sharing this chunky board book fun with us!
