Oi Duck-Billed Platypus!

The Oi Frog series by Kes Gray and Jim Field is one of my favourite to read together with my children, it never fails to make all of us laugh and I love that both of my children know the words now too. Over the years we have enjoyed the new additions to the series, eagerly awaiting the next book to arrive on our shelves.

Oi Duck-Billed Platypus! is the fourth book in this hilarious series. Before now the animals have always been found a place to sit on based on what their name rhymes with, but Frog is now challenged to find a place for the animals with impossible-to-rhyme-with names to sit. Like duck-billed platypuses, ostriches and hippopotamuses.

“What rhymes with duck-billed platypus?” whispered the frog. “Absolutely nothing,” smiled the cat. “What about cluck-filled hatty bus? Or yuk-spilled splatty mouse? Or truck-frilled flappy goose? said the dog.”

And so the frog comes up with a plan, having each animal give their first name and finding where they are supposed to sit on based on that. The duck-billed platypus is called Dolly, and “Dollys sit on brollies.”

You will laugh as the new rhyming story unfolds, giggling out loud at the sight of each animal’s new sitting place. If you’ve read the series before Frog, Cat and Dog will by now seem like old friends, but you’ll love meeting the new animals in the book, all brought to life through beautiful bright coloured illustrations.

My children choose these books again and again at storytime, we never grow tired of reading them and we never stop laughing either.

Oi Duck-Billed Platypus! is available from book stores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R165.

Thanks to Pan Macmillan for sharing this hilarious new book with us.
