Perfectly Different

We have so many people of different cultures living here in South Africa, one of the many reasons that raising my children to be kind and accepting individuals is very important to me. So I was excited to receive Perfectly Different and be able to read it together with my children.

Perfectly Different is a picture book that gives you the opportunity to discuss how each of us is different, and how we should celebrate those differences. A boy asks his mom why his friends are different to him, and she gently explains how we are all different in both appearance and character and how it would be boring if we were all the same.

The rhyming text makes it a wonderful story to read, with differences in our hair to our skin colour, our hobbies and even our clothing style being discussed.  I love the way in which our differences are compared, in such a way that your children will be able to understand but also opening an important discussion that you can have about being perfectly different, embracing those differences and respecting them too.

“It takes a bit of everyone

to make the perfect crowd,

and it really doesn’t matter

if you’re brown, white, quiet or loud.”

Perfectly Different is available from book stores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R90. It’s recommended for children aged three to six years of age. This would make a wonderful addition to school libraries, even more so because it is a proudly South African book. Perfectly Different is written by Sarah Tavola and illustrated by Sinan Hallak.

Thanks to Penguin Random House for sharing this book with us.
