As a mother you’ll know that worrying about your children is part of the job description. From the moment that our little ones are born we keep a close eye on their development, and we try to give them the best of everything we can to give them a good start in life. For this reason, we rejoice when they say their first word, do a happy dance when they eat a super food like avocado, and high-five our husbands when they get excited to read a book. And every night we are so thankful that we can give our children everything that they need, because we know that there are so many others across our country who cannot.

There is research that shows that 90% of brain development happens before your child turns five. For those of us parents who have access to books, nutritional food, stimulating environments, and educational toys this statistic won’t be so daunting. Yet let’s think for a moment about those parents who work full time and may not have access to Early Childhood Development centre’s with the expertise to maximise their child’s  development.

Early Childhood Development programmes become a vital part of support for parents and caregivers, and it’s saddening to know that less than 16% of children in our KwaZulu-Natal province have access to these. This is where Thanda, a non-profit organisation that is working in the local Umtwalume community, comes into focus.

Support and expansion

Thanda provides children with the opportunity to engage in educational and stimulating programmes in a safe environment along with keeping tummies full with hot meals. Here you will find the only library and playground in the area, along with the very popular skate park and even an art centre.

NIVEA has shown how it cares for our communities by supporting Thanda over the past two years. As a result of this partnership a new ECD Centre is in the works that will be able to support more children and after-school programmes and feeding schemes have been expanded too. And all the while the word is spreading – more children are now participating in programmes, visiting the centre; more books are being borrowed; and more meals served. This all translates to more children being stimulated, having fun, being happier, and generally being given the tools to stand a better chance at succeeding in life.
