The Amazing African Animal Alphabet

As the title of the book suggests, The Amazing African Animal Alphabet is a new children’s book that teaches the alphabet to little ones using the amazing animals that live on our African continent. You can also guess from the wonderful way in which the book’s name incorporates alliteration that you’ll be treated to some fun reading as you try to spot things starting with each letter of the alphabet on every page too.

Everything about this book is so incredibly local and totally lekker. You’ll even get that feel from the cover of the book, which features the heads of a zebra, elephant, crocodile, rhino and giraffe in a beautiful hand-drawn like style. Turn it over to see their tails… absolutely love it!

The book features a different animal for each letter of the alphabet, but not only do you get an incredible animal whose name starts with that specific letter…the animal is also holding an item or doing an activity which begins with that letter of the alphabet too! For example, Amahle the Aardvark who is eating avocado, or Emma the Elephant who is eating eggs and wearing earrings. There is a sentence for each illustration that introduces the animal which will also encourage your children to read.

Each letter is depicted in both upper and lower case, and both are big enough to allow for and encourage young readers to trace the letters with their finger. The illustrations are so beautifully done by Kristina Jones who wrote and illustrated this book. Each animal is so vibrantly coloured and happily performing a fun activity that you’ll probably find yourself smiling when you read it to your children. Have you ever seen a crocodile cooking carrots and corn? Well Chris the crocodile can! How about a flamingo frying a fish? Fikile has it all organised! A jackal juggling jam? Easy for Jacob of course!

Not only is The Amazing African Animal Alphabet a fun illustrated alphabet book to read, but it’s an investment in your child’s education too. They will learn the alphabet from this book, and they will also learn valuable pronunciation skills through the clever alliteration included on each page. It’s a book to consider adding to your book shelf, and I would highly recommend that schools across South Africa look to include it in their reading time too. As we all already know, local is lekker!

The Amazing African Animal Alphabet is available in hardback cover from bookstores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R140. It’s recommended for children from ages 3 to 6 years. Peek inside this awesome new book in my gallery below:
