One by One (Book Review)

Picture this, you’re staying in a luxury chalet together with your work colleagues. The chalet is in a remote snowy region, and you’re enjoying the fine dining and skiing opportunities…until the guests start to disappear, One by One, and you realise just how isolated you really are.

This is the reality for the shareholders and directors of the hottest new music app, Snoop, all of whom have gathered for a corporate retreat. But it’s not all cocktails and hot cocoa, because a billion-dollar dotcom buyout is at stake and not everyone will leave a millionaire should the sale go ahead.

Erin, one of the hosts at the ski resort of Saint Antoine, notices the tension between certain members of the group. But it still comes as a shock when a board member goes missing after an avalanche cuts the chalet off from the outside world. Now stranded in an icy wasteland the strain is made worse, and it’s not long before uncomfortable questions are raised. Was the disappearance really an accident or is someone willing to murder to get what they want?

The group is forced to stay put, hoping that help will reach them soon. It’s getting colder and food supplies are running low, but that’s not even the biggest threat they are now facing. As the snow falls steadily and the temperatures plummet, the fear within the chalet builds as everyone begins to doubt one another. Accusations fly, truths surface and it doesn’t take long for paranoia to set in.

One by One by Ruth Ware is a gripping tale of friendship, alliances and assurances given, but also one of insecurities, sadness and ultimately revenge. One things for sure, when your life is at risk the stakes are suddenly much higher than millions of dollars and you can’t trust anyone.

One by One is available from bookstores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R310. You can read an extract from this latest thriller here.
