Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (Game Review)

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is another great addition to the Nintendo Switch library. It’s filled with beautifully creative worlds, giving players the opportunity to explore the imaginative areas using the fun power-ups and their puzzle-solving skills to complete the challenges each platforming level offers.

The game is set within the Sprixie Kingdom and you’ll need to travel through the different worlds to save the Sprixies that Bowser has kidnapped. From the dessert to the snow, from under the sea to on top of the clouds and even a Bowser theme park, you’ll enjoy chasing down Bowser on this exciting journey.

Mario doesn’t have to journey alone on this adventure, you can team up with up to three players with Luigi, Peach, and Toad also able to join the fun. Each character has their own unique abilities, so whether you prefer the great all-rounder Mario, Luigi who can leap higher, Peach’s handy mid-air float, Toad’s extra speed or even Rosalina’s (who you can unlock after completing the main game) spin attack it brings a variety, a welcome change of pace and great replayability option to the game.

Four player co-operative fun is absolutely awesome, and it also makes Super Mario 3D World so accessible even for younger players. The more experienced player is able to guide the younger player, helping them to solve puzzles and collect power-ups along the way. There is also the option for that younger player to float along in their bubble after losing a life and regenerating, making it possible to help them along over the more difficult sections in a level. The Invincibility Leaf power-up is also offered to players after losing a certain number of lives in a level, this gives Mario a White Tanooki Suit and gives him invincibility for that level making it much easier for the little ones to play.

My kids delighted in discovering the secrets of each level, there are stars to collect and the bonus stamp which was always exciting when we found it as it is a collectible. Seeing their confidence and skills grow as they played was great to see, and I can definitely see that ‘just one more level’ gamer mentality is being passed onto the new gaming generation! Wanting to go back and 100% the levels will mean you get many hours of play out of Super Mario 3D World.

But more than that the fun we had as a family playing all together, making memories and spending time laughing as our character went plummeting off the edge yet again or unsuccessfully trying to outrun a pesky boo on a moving escalator, makes this one of my favourite games that we have played together on the Nintendo Switch so far. Despite the inevitable chaos that four player multiplayer brings with power-ups needing to be shared and some players getting left behind on the levels that demanded more speed, I also saw co-operation and teamwork being developed between the two children as well as a determination to overcome the challenges thrown their way.

As a bonus you’ll also get to explore Bowser’s Fury, a new adventure where you can team up with a friend to help Bowser Jr. stop his dad’s rampage.  This free-roaming 3D adventure will see you navigating across different islands to collect the mysterious Cat Shrines and battle against the enormous Fury Bowser when he emerges from the water.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a fantastic title that the whole family can enjoy together. It’s been a top choice for game nights in our home, and promises to bring hours of fun to every gamer no matter their skill level. I played the original on the Wii U back in 2013 and I’ve loved every minute of playing this enhanced version of the game again with my children now too.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is available from the Nintendo eStore for a recommended retail price of R1129.
