Yes Yanga!

Cricket fever has gripped the nation and Protea fire is in our hearts as our South African cricket team take on the top teams from around the world in the Cricket World Cup in England. I have such fond memories of growing up watching cricket, and I love that I can now share that excitement of watching our team in green and gold with my children too.

Yes Yanga! is the new book from local author Refiloe Moahloli. It’s such a great story to share together with your children, and perfect timing to add to your bedtime story line-up with the Cricket World Cup on the go. She captivated my two children with How Many Ways Can You Say Hello? and I love how inspiring this new story of Yanga is for our children.

Yanga is a 3 Tins Champion, he has amazing skill at knocking the three tins over even when his friends try to make it more challenging for him. He’s introduced to cricket which is a bit like 3 Tins, and we will learn more about the sport as told through simple explanations by Moahloli and fun, colourful illustrations by Mogau Kekana.

“There is nothing Yanga loves more than a challenge” so he learns to bat and practises his bowling…“And the wickets tumbled” as his amazing skill is noticed and he’s selected to play for the national team. The team make it to the World Cup Final, but you’ll have to read the book to find out how this 3 Tins Champion ends up performing on the field!

If you have a child who loves cricket then they will enjoy reading Yes Yanga! The repetition in the story will mean your children will soon be reading along with you, and I love how the book encourages our children to follow their dreams.

Yes Yanga! is available from book stores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R140. It’s also available in isiXhosa.

Thanks to Pan Macmillan for sharing Yes Yanga! with us.
