Shhh can you hear us?

Shhh can you hear us? is a new children’s picture book from Veruska De Vita. It’s a fun story that will have your own children smiling as a brother and sister head out on an adventure in their pyjamas instead of being in bed.

The two children sneak out to their neighbour’s house to play with their friends. Even though they believe they’re being quiet, thinking their mother doesn’t know they’re gone, they’re surprised to learn that she knew every move they took when she comes to fetch them to go to bed.

You’ll see them crawling on the floor, walking out the door, hopping through the garden, climbing up the tree and tapping at the window before joining their friends in hiding inside and getting up to a bit of mischief in the process!

We have always enjoyed reading books that have repetition and rhyme, and the repetition of the word “shhh” together with the different kinds of action words makes Shhh can you hear us? a great choice as a bedtime book to share with your children.

The illustrations by Azrah Osman are bright and beautiful, and accompany the story so well that your children will be able to flip through the book alone and enjoy watching the tale unfold even without being able to read themselves yet.  I love the animals included in the book, and your kiddies will love spotting them on the different pages: the hiding cat in the hedge, the small mouse eating his cheese in the tree, and the slimy snails exploring the garden outside. The fun details included in the bedrooms also help to bring the story to life, for example the hand drawn art stuck on the wall and all the different toys in the toy box.

Shhh can you hear us? is available from Bargain Books, Exclusive Books and other book stores for a recommended retail price of R120. It’s recommended for children aged three to six years of age. The author is local and this is her debut novel so be sure to check it out and remember that local is lekker!
