The Very Hungry Caterpillar 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a children’s book that has captivated children for decades now, and today we celebrate 50 years since this incredible book was first published. That’s 50 years that children have been eagerly selecting The Very Hungry Caterpillar from their bookshelf and climbing up on their parent’s laps to listen to a fun and memorable story about The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Eric Carle is the well-known author and illustrator of this popular book, which since it was first published in 1969 has been translated into over 62 languages and sold over 50 million copies worldwide. To celebrate 50 years of The Very Hungry Caterpillar there is a new limited hardback edition of this classic available and if you, like me, love books and reading then you have to add this to your collection!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition features a stunning gold jacket as well as bonus content inside. You’ll enjoy reading about the story of the making of this classic as well as a letter to the reader from Eric Carle.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar tells the story of a tiny and very hungry caterpillar who starts his journey as a little egg but soon pops out and begins to look for food. He eats his way through different type of fruits and food on each day of the week until he gets a stomachache. After eating a nice green leaf he feels better but he finds that he’s not hungry any more, and neither is he little! He builds a cocoon and turns into a beautiful butterfly.

Your children will love the simplicity of the story, it will mean that they can remember which food he eats on which day… and before long you will be listening to the story as told by them. The illustrations are bright and your children will love exploring the die-cut pages and finger-sized holes, making this book the perfect choice for a bedtime story for children of all ages.

So how will you be celebrating The Very Hungry Caterpillar turning 50? Here’s a few ideas: spend some time reading the book to your children; see how much of the book your children can remember and let them recite it to you; create some fun art together, like this fun marshmallow caterpillar or a crafty paper chain caterpillar.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition is available in hardback from book stores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R290. It’s recommended for children aged three years and younger.

Thanks to Penguin Random House for sharing this beautiful new collector’s edition with us.
