I was gifted the Cook & Enjoy cookbook for my 21st birthday from family friends and I’ve enjoyed recipes from it over the years since. My children love helping cook and bake with us in the kitchen, so we were delighted to receive the new companion Cook & Enjoy for Kids.
One of the regrets I have is not learning more about cooking from my mom and gran growing up, so I’ve been eager to get the kids involved from an early age and teach them as much as possible. They love baking crumpets and cupcakes with their dad on the weekends, but they also enjoy helping to peel vegetables for dinners during the week. Long may their enthusiasm to help last!
Cook & Enjoy for Kids, described as the “perfect cookbook for beginners of all ages”, features over 55 recipes that your children will love to test. There are step-by-step instructions and full colour photograph illustrations that make it easy for children to learn how to make the recipes themselves. Children can also learn how to use a recipe, measure ingredients, use kitchen tools, work safely in the kitchen and understand cooking terms.
I’m a dessert kind of girl, it’s often the first thing I look at on the menu when eating out! So I’m happy to report that there are delicious dessert recipes in this book. My kids would be hard pressed to choose a favourite because there’s everything from crumpets to pancakes, from honey cake to crisp custard squares. Let’s just say that I was a very willing test subject!
It also features an assortment of drinks (think banana smoothie and chocolate milkshake), breakfast options (from oats porridge to French toast), main meals (staples like macaroni cheese and bolognaise sauce to pizza and baked meatballs) and even a section on salad, vegetables and rice.
Cook & Enjoy for Kids will help to teach your children about the basics of cooking. This new revised, updated and redesigned cookbook will be a handy addition to your cookbook corner.
Cook & Enjoy for Kids by S.J.A. de Villiers and Eunice van der Berg is available from bookstores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R280. It’s also available in Afrikaans as Klein kook en geniet. You can browse through an extract of the book which features two recipes here.
