What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside

We have loved reading the books in the What the Ladybird Heard series by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks. By now both of my children can recite the story as we read, so we were very excited to head off together with the ladybird in a new adventure to the seaside.

What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside sees Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len back to their nefarious ways again. This time the troublesome duo is plotting to steal the mermaid’s hair.

This hardback edition features glitter on every page, something which always delights the kids as they can explore the tactile textures on the pages. If your child has read any of the books in this series before they will recognise the familiar refrain of the sounds that each of the characters make. The fun rhyming story paired with the wonderfully bright illustrations combine to deliver another fantastic title from the powerhouse team that is writer Julia Donaldson and illustrator Lydia Monks.

Your children will love searching the detailed spreads, spotting the ladybird on each one and even discovering other little secrets like Julia Donaldson and her husband Malcolm performing a children’s show on the beach with the Gruffalo puppet, Lydia Monks driving through the countryside and the cast from Sharing a Shell. They will giggle as the ladybird shares her idea to thwart Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len, and then be mesmerized to see how the plan plays out with the seaside animal friends.

What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside is an excellent addition to this series and would make a great choice for storytime.

What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside is available from bookstores and online retailers in hardback for a recommended retail price of R250. It’s recommended for children aged three to seven years.

Your children can even learn to draw the animals and the mermaid from this new adventure, don’t miss Lydia Monks’ draw along video below.

Thanks to Pan Macmillan for sharing this wonderful new adventure with us.
