Don’t be shy, Bushbaby (Book Review)

Don’t be shy, Bushbaby is a new children’s picture book from author Avril van der Merwe and illustrator Heidi-Kate Greeff. It’s a fun story that will have your children giggling over the antics of the animals in the book, but also brings the opportunity to teach different ideas to your kids.

Don’t be shy, Bushbaby

Bushbaby is curled up sleeping inside his hole in the tree. The animals are desperate to play with him, and so one by one they try to wake him. Convinced he’s shy and just needs encouragement to come out, first giraffe then monkey and even elephant attempt to coax him out. The owl in the tree watches but remains quiet through this all.

Eventually the animals decide to try again tomorrow and head off. In the darkness owl swoops down to wake Bushbaby, who excitedly sets out to explore his surroundings, meeting other nocturnal animals along the way all the while his friend owl keeps a watchful eye on him.

My children always love stories with animals in, and Don’t be shy, Bushbaby is no exception. While you’re reading this story together don’t forget you can chat about the different types of animals we meet in the book along with discussing which animals prefer to move around during the day and those which prefer the night time.

Don’t be shy, Bushbaby is available from bookstores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R100. You can also keep an eye out for the other two books by Avril van der Merwe, How Cheetah Got His Tears and Once Upon a Rhinoceros.
