Moana sets sail into South African movie theatres

Disney has already given us a number of incredible animated movies to enjoy together with our family. They’ve created characters that our children have fallen in love with, they’ve shared songs that we all still sing along to, and they’ve given us the opportunity to have fun with themed parties and matching bed-linen and pyjamas. It’s time to get ready for another epic adventure with Moana, the latest animated feature film from the studio, which will set sail into local cinemas on the 2nd of December.

Moana ticks all the boxes that we have come to expect from a good quality Disney movie: new and interesting characters; intriguing and innovative storyline; kooky but loveable animal sidekicks; incredibly vibrant art style; catchy tunes; and just the right balance of adventure and humour.

The movie tells the tale of Moana, a spirited teenager who from a young age has felt the pull of the ocean to explore beyond the safety of her own island. The chief’s daughter finally gives in to this call, leading her on an action-packed journey as she sets out to enlist the help of demigod Maui to help save her people.

Although new to the scene Auli’i Cravalho breathes life into the beautiful Moana, while you’ll recognise the voice of Dwayne Johnson bringing the attitude that only he could to Maui. The storytelling through his tattoos is particularly entertaining, matched only by his wide-eyed eyebrow waggling, a nod to the man in real life who has been taking the world by storm.

The world of Moana has been masterfully created with vibrant island colours and songs, while the culture of the people has been woven respectfully through the story. In true Disney style the movie will appeal to kiddies and parents alike, who will enjoy the funny looking chicken and loveable pet pig as much as they will embrace the serious yet whimsical grandmother who encourages Moana to discover her destiny.

Team Moana with some popcorn and a few sweet treats, and it’s sure to be a favourite with the whole family, and definitely a winner for a school holiday outing. Parents of younger children just take note that while animated there are a few scary looking enemies that may frighten the sensitive little souls among us.
