The Hospital Dog (Book Review)

The Hospital Dog is a new children’s book from Julia Donaldson and Sara Ogilvie, the creators of the wonderful The Detective Dog. This charming picture book stars Dot the hospital dog and is a story about kindness, bravery and friendship.

The Hospital Dog

The children of Wallaby Ward are always happy to see Dot, and she loves the cuddles and love she receives from them. We meet many children in the ward, each feeling a bit blue over not being well, but as soon as Dot arrives they forget about feeling scared, bored or lonely.

Done for the day Dot and her owner Rose are heading home, but Dot suddenly finds herself choosing to save a deaf boy who she had met earlier in the ward. Although she saves the boy sadly she’s injured and, forced to rest at home, she now finds herself bored.  Before long, however, the children from the ward visit her to help her feel better and repay her kindness.

With gentle rhyme, a catchy repetitive refrain and beautiful colour illustrations it won’t take long for your children to fall in love with this heartwarming story of The Hospital Dog.

The Hospital Dog is available in hardback from bookstores and online retailers for a recommended retail price of R250.
